Ecological–Perceptual Pathways in Age-Friendly Rural Spaces

Abstract

Population ageing increases the need for age-friendly rural public spaces supporting older adults’ everyday well-being. This study investigates ecological–perceptual pathways among Ecological Experience, Spatial Perception, Perceived Health Effect, and Spatial Satisfaction. Data from 176 older residents were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling, complemented by behavioural observation. Results identify significant direct and mediated relationships, including the sequential ECO → SPA → PHE → SPS pathway. The findings indicate that ecological quality is associated with age-friendly spatial evaluation through perceptual and health-related appraisal, providing practical design evidence for improving everyday rural public spaces for older adults.
